Love Muscle.

Muscle in, love is love.

This is the music we live with,

A muscular music, indeed,

And a languid life will never do.

This emotion is like a river.

Dive in. You can’t swim?

Dive in anyway.

You’re not going to live forever,

So you might as well just live.

A Place You Can Go. (Haibun)

It was a box, like many other boxes, plain, cardboard. Looking inside, I could see that it was full of arrows, but not arrows for archery. The box was full of arrows for pointing out which way to go. My soul asked, “What will you do now? Where will you go?” My soul likes to ask me questions. “Maybe it’s time for a journey,” I answered, and I threw the box up into the air as high as I could. Arrows fell to the earth like clues, and I set out walking.

There is no path, no road,
and there’s no good advice either.
Walker, watch your step!

A New Dawn.

A new dawn, naked and raw,

And you are left to the mercy of urban birds.

The streets are full of sound and odor,

And in your eyes a hopeful light grows.

Language, you think,

Needs to be clean, and love must be warm.

You can hold something, or someone,

And then move on.

Or just keep holding on.

Either way, this life is yours alone,

Such as it is.

You alone, and no one else.

Goodnight.

Sleep, little granddaughter.

Close your dark eyes and sleep.

Dream of the end of winter,

Of sunny days and learning to run.

Dream of spring and summer,

And of love yet to be.

Snuggle down and sleep easy,

Sweet one,

For the good things are sure to come.

In this fine life, my grandchild,

Good things will come.

Poems and haibun by Jobe

Our granddaughter, Khaleesi Luna Buckner, around the time I wrote the poem above.
