we open our chests to the sky

this shirtÂ
the collar and sleeves are frayedÂ
the cloth is thinÂ
and these jeans have some spots
that are worn throughÂ
I have sewn up holesÂ
in both of these socks tooÂ
in a way the clothesÂ
match my old body and spiritÂ
I too am worn and frayed
warm for februaryÂ
people in sunlight with no jackets onÂ
sunlight in our hair
on our facesÂ
somehow it lessens the sadness of livingÂ
just a littleÂ
it’s a heavy life at timesÂ
shall we open our chests to the skyÂ
and ask the sunlight to warm our heartsÂ
shall turn off our electronic devicesÂ
and listen to the chirping of the birdsÂ
as they hop on the grassÂ
and sing from the trees
yes let's do thatÂ
let us now remove our shoes
and join the birds in the grassÂ
like children
hard things come in a lifeÂ
we cannot change that
but by god we can take a momentÂ
and enjoy the good thingsÂ
the tiny treasures
the joys
-for John Burroughs-
your bodyÂ
soft as a pillow
and I am so in need of sleep

The poet is like a mouse in an enormous cheese excited by how much cheese there is to eat.Â
