without horses or whiskey

Jason Scarpace
putah creek savors the moonlightÂ
a cool night  quietÂ
there is a delta breezeÂ
an owl watches from an oak branchÂ
but doesn't ask 'who'Â
moonlight shines across the moving waterÂ
look at me  I'm still aliveÂ
---
life is a confusing movieÂ
with a sudden endÂ
the actors are easily brokenÂ
like chalk  like eggsÂ
they have no script to followÂ
and there is no directorÂ
the movie is a westernÂ
but without horses or whiskeyÂ
now you be quietÂ
and pass the popcornÂ
---
I used to try to think it all throughÂ
   but no moreÂ
now I just try to feel it allÂ
I want to touch everythingÂ
   and everyoneÂ
---
when I weepÂ
I want the whole world to be silentÂ
even the wind and the oceanÂ
should just shut up for a little while
---
I have grown old but it's ok I like itÂ
and my wife is older than meÂ
but she seems youngerÂ
I like that tooÂ
I like so many things nowÂ
old songs that I didn't like when they were newÂ
seeing someone else's footprint in the mudÂ
being sober all of the timeÂ
and I especially enjoy not giving anyone adviceÂ
that's all for nowÂ
goodbye

"Hotei Bird and Monk" - Keith Abbott
Wake up, our ship has been ice-bound long enough, the time has come to sail the open seas.Â
