Thank you! He had a lot of poems and never told me. I found out after he died. I like them. He would play guitar and sing his songs, but he kept the poems quiet. Guess I'll never know why.
I wonder if he endured some kind of trauma he didn’t or couldn’t share with you, that drove him to some of his unhealthy/ risky escapes. We’re all vulnerable to it. Hugs, hugs. Long hug. My good friend.
If so, it was after he moved away at 18. Things were really a little dull here in the burbs. Maybe he was afraid it would be a competition between us, but all I would have is support him, like I did with his music.
When Will was 5 Francisco Alarcon came out with a bilingual collection of poems for kids. I took Will to the Davis reading; he’d been at many adult readings. Hell, the kid knew Gary Snyder by then. Francisco read the poems and asked the kids if there were any questions. Will stood up and asked, “Do you have anything else? Maybe some Rumi?” Francisco looked right at me and said, “That’s YOUR son, right?”
Thank you for sharing Will’s poem and pictures and sharing about your family and childhood. May our Source bless all whom you love. And you! 🙏🏼
